Playlist Monday with Jennifer Laurens + Giveaway

Here's another edition of Playlist Monday! I'm here now together with Jennifer Laurens; author of Overprotected, Heavenly Series, Falling for Romeo, A Season of Eden, Nailed, Magic Hands, An Open Vein and now her latest book Grace Doll. She's here to talk about her books and the music behind her writing. I've had the chance to read her works and it's pretty decent! You guys should totally check out her books :)

Here's Jennifer taking the center stage...

I create a soundtrack to every book I write. I listen to it day in and day out until the project is finished. This habit drives my family crazy – because they’re stuck listening to it, too. Listening to the soundtrack helps me stay in the groove of the story so that when I can sneak in moments here and there to write, I’m mentally ready. Most of the time, it works.

The playlist is small, but captures the essence of two eras: 1940s Hollywood Glamorous and today.

Nightmare – by Artie Shaw ( a powerful, unforgettable tune reminiscent of Grace’s nightmare life )

Someone to Watch Over Me – by Frank Sinatra ( A song both Solomon and Jonathan dedicated to Grace)

I’m in Here – Sia ( Piano version ) Haunting. Wonderfully descriptive of Grace’s feelings both as a film icon and a young girl who has lived many, many years dealing with immortality )

Winter Love – Jennifer Mardesich (My daughter is a talented singer/songwriter and this song of hers, with its specific lyrics about love, fit the soundtrack perfectly.)

So Will I – Nik Day (The first time I heard this song, I knew it had to be part of GRACE DOLL somehow. It’s simple piano accompaniment, the lyrics and the vocals lent themselves to the overall mood that is Grace’s story. I used the song in the GraceDoll Happy Ending video that is embedded in the ebook versions of the book. If you haven’t seen it, don’t miss it! Go to YouTube and type in Grace Doll Happy Ending! )

Haunted – Taylor Swift ( Acoustic ) Taylor’s acoustic version summarizes Grace’s feelings about her life—and her feelings about Brenden. I adore this song for Grace.

Stardust – Nat King Cole ( I listened to a great deal of Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra while writing Grace Doll. Both singers would have been popular during her reign as starlet in the 1940’s. Stardust captures sweet innocence of new discovery—likeGrace and Brenden are experiencing in each other.

Breathe Me – Sia ( Another Sia song. Her aching melodies can’t be beat when writing angst!)

Spotlight – Jennifer Mardesich (My creative daughter again! I used this song in the Grace Doll trailer. It’s like she wrote it for GraceDoll – though she didn’t. I love the trailer, and would love you to check out my own, ‘mini movie’ of Grace Doll—again, on YouTube.

Grace Doll had everything a girl could want: Fame. Fortune. Beauty.

Everything except, of course, her freedom. So when a powerful movie producer forces an experimental treatment on Grace--one that's purported to make beauty immortal--she stages her own death to escape him.

With the help of trusted friends, Grace slips into hiding. She's forever flawless, forever young and forever pursued by her past.

But when a stranger arrives on her doorstep, holding the key to a life she thought she'd left behind, Grace must decide between the safety she's known... and embracing the role she was born to play.

I write YA books. Whatever my heart desires, I write. I don't have someone over my shoulder, in some office somewhere telling me what I can and cannot write. Or should and shouldn't write. I listen to my heart, the center of my muse, and trust my instincts.

I've written since junior high school. An only child, I grew up writing big stories about big families. I also write YA under the name of JM Warwick. My hometown of Palos Verdes, California figures in much of my work, as does my current home of Pleasant Grove, Utah and other favorite places. I love to travel.

They say "write what you know" and I do. I am a mother, I have six children, five cats and a huge doberman/dane dog. I have a supportive husband and we've been married 25 years. Our lives, though challenging with a handicapped child who has autism, are centered in our family.

My life experiences have worked into all of my novels. Some more heavily than others, but parts of me are in each story. I love stories rich in family drama, where family members overcome obstacles through love and miracles.
