Hi Melissa, thank you for taking time on doing this Interview with us!

Thanks so much for having me!

Let’s start off with your journey to publication, was it hard? Was it easy? Tell us about it.

When I started, I had absolutely no clue what I was doing. I spent sooo much time on Google that summer. I researched query letters and formatting and every detail I could find about the industry. I hadn’t given up, but after a year of submitting to agents with no results and all the honest (and blunt) rejection stories I’d seen from big time authors, I decided to self-publish Frey.I figured at least I could share it with a few readers instead of keeping it locked away on my hard drive. I got a lot of great feedback, but it was another full year of revising, reformatting, and new cover art before it started to do well. At the time, it all probably seemed terribly frustrating and I would have told you yes, it was definitely, incredibly hard. But I’ve learned so much from that journeyand grown through the entire process in a way that I would never want to give back. So now, when I have a great editing team, cover artist, and all those behind the scenes helpers in place, I can almost say it’s easy. But I would probably stress the “almost.”

Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.

It’s every single time someone loves the story or a character. Nothing feels better than hearing a rave review or getting a late night email because someone couldn’t sleep for wanting to stay with the characters to the end.

What inspired you to want to become a writer?

Reading. Sharing it with friends. I remember we’d just finished a great series. We were so disappointed it was over and simply couldn’t stop talking about it. We joked that we should make our own and later that day, I sent a text message with the first “line” of Frey. We laughed and I added another, and it was so much fun that I had to keep going. Five months later, I’d written a book. It baffles me to this day, but I wouldn’t give it up for the world.

Let’s talk about your book Bound by Prophecy, what is your inspiration on writing it?

I’d been working on Rise of the Seven (book three in the Frey Saga) and was toying with the boundaries of Frey’s power to control the humans. I kept thinking how fantastic that would be in a current world, a modern setting without every day magic, and the idea wouldn’t leave me alone. I got the first few lines down, and Aern became my inspiration. His character was so much fun to write.

Do you love listening to music while writing? Can you give us 2 or 3 songs that reminds you about your book/s and why?

I don’t listen while I’m actually writing, but music definitely inspires me while I’m not attached to the keyboard. It’s odd, because it isn’t the lyrics that seem to inspire me as much as the rhythm and feel of the song. I always have a playlist, but there are usually one or two that, no matter when or where I hear them, will put the story in mind. For Bound by Prophecy, those are Ho Hey by The Lumineers(love the refrain on that one), I Will Wait by Mumford &Sons, and Carry On by Fun.

Do you have a dream cast for your book/s? If you do, please tell us about it!

Paul Walker
This is always so much fun! And for Aern, I would definitely say (or shout out might be a better term) Paul Walker. Emily is a little harder for me, because her personality is so guarded and she’s got a very distinct look in my mind. But I would say Emma Watson or Emma Stone. A girl who could appear innocent but is tough enough to handle herself when things get nasty.

What was your favorite book when you were a child/teen?

As a teen, I loved the Grimm fairy tales. The older stories and fables were so dark and twisty. I haven’t read them for so long, I can’t say one story in particular, but I loved the unexpected not-safe-for-Disney stories. They fascinated me. And now I feel like I’m going to have to add that to my TBR list again.

What’s one piece of advice you would give aspiring authors?

Write. The one best way to become a writer is through doing. You may not be brave enough to share the first words that come out, but the practice will make you better, will make it easier, and will inspire you to do more. Write and keep writing.

Thank you Melissa for this wonderful interview! Please invite our readers to read Bound by Prophecy.

Thank you for the opportunity to share a bit about my writing! I hope everyone enjoys reading Bound by Prophecy as much as I’ve enjoyed writing it.

Twenty-two-year-old Aern is done watching his brother destroy the only thing that matters. He never wanted to take Morgan’s place among council, never wanted to rule their hidden world. But when the key to the prophecy is found, a young girl named Brianna whom Morgan will destroy, Aern knows he has to take action.

What he really wants, is for things to go back to normal. But now he’s kidnapped a girl, and his brother’s men are after him. His only hope is to join with the Division, but they have plans of their own, and it’s the last thing Aern is willing to do.
Emily just wants her sister back. She doesn't care about the prophecy, or realize what’s at stake. But when she goes after Aern, the truth of the matter uncoils, and Brianna isn't the only one who’s in danger.
Suddenly, they’re at the center of a secret war, and unless they can work together, they’ll both have a sacrifice too big to make.
