So without further ado, here's my interview with Julia!
Hi Julia, thank you taking time on doing interview with us!
Thank you so much!
To start off this interview let's talk about what made you interested in writing, is there a story behind it? Tell us about it.
I've been writing for years, everything for academic writing to business work to fiction. I started writing romance novels a few years ago and here I am. I LOVE MY JOB. Can't scream that loud enough.
What's the most rewarding thing you experienced being a writer?
Letters from readers. I am a curvy woman myself (although, oddly enough, I've dropped a bit of weight since I started writing romance novels! Still curvy – just a tad less) and my heroines are mostly curvy, and women (and some men! Mostly husbands of curvy women) write to tell me how much they love that I have strong female characters who are also big and beautiful – and that the men love them.
Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?
Write a book. Then write another. And Another. When you first start writing that first book seems like SUCH A HUGE THING. I hate to say it, but it's not – when you look back a few years. That doesn't diminish how important it is – I just mean that in the span of a career as a writer, the only thing you can do when you finish a book is to start the next one.
Is there a particular book that you read and would recommend to everyone? (Aside from your book of course)
Alice Clayton's Wallbanger, Gretchen Galway's The Supermodel's Best Friend, Emma Chase's Tangled and Courtney Milan's Unveiled. Sorry – I know that's 4 books, but I can't pick!
Now let's talk about your book Random Acts of Crazy, what inspired you on writing it?
Darla's voice hit me out of NOWHERE one day while I was driving on the Interstate here in Massachusetts. I wondered what would happen if you were driving along one day and saw a naked dude with just a guitar covering his...fun parts. And then BAM! This central Ohio chick's voice started pouring the story out in my head. I wrote the first 10,000 words in a crazy burst and the rest is history.
Do you have a favorite character to write when you were writing Random Acts of Crazy? What made you him/her your favorite?
Darla was my favorite. By far. I loved Uncle Mike, though – especially the part where he...oh. Wait. That's a spoiler. Never mind.
Do you have a Dream Cast for your book? (if yes, please one character and tell us about it)
Jennifer Lawrence as Darla. Oh please please please. She'd need to gain some weight, but otherwise she'd be PERFECT. Her performance in Silver Linings Playbook was amazingly nuanced, and I can only imagine she'd nail Darla's accent.
What's next for Julia after Random Acts of Crazy? Are you writing something or any future books we should know about?
I just released Suspiciously Obedient, the second in my “Obedient” series, on July 3, and on July 31 It's Complicated is released – and Darla, Trevor and Joe play a small role in that book, which is about Darla's Aunt Josie (who is in Random Acts of Crazy!). I love to interweave my characters from different series. And then in September comes Random Acts of Trust, the next in the “Random” series, which is about Sam, the band's drummer. So much more coming soon!
Thank you Julia for this wonderful interview! Please invite our readers to read Random Acts of Crazy :)
ABOUT THE BOOK
by Julia Kent
Series: Random #1
Published: May 21st 2013
Publisher: Self Published
Genre: New Adult / Contemporary Romance
I never intended to pick up a naked hitchhiker wearing nothing but a guitar. A guitar. Really. I don't collect guys like that (don't ask what kind of guys I do collect), but when you spot a blonde, tanned, sculpted man with a gorgeous smile and his thumb poking up and practically begging you to stop - you stop. And I definitely never thought I'd be staring into the bright blue eyes of Trevor Connor, the lead singer for Random Acts of Crazy, an indie rock star I followed like the slobbering fileshare fangirl I am. How he came to be nude and lost six hundred miles from home is quite the tale, but how we fell in love is even more unreal. Because someone like Trevor Connor, headed to Harvard Law next year, isn't supposed to want someone like me, a rural Ohio chick majoring in Boredom at Convenience Store University who is all curves and frizzy blonde hair and manners so unpolished they have sharp edges that make you bleed. But he did. When his best friend, Joe Ross, the bass player for Random Acts of Crazy and a man who makes Calvin Klein models look like Shrek, drove eleven hours through the night to rescue him, though, it got real complicated. It's one thing to like two different guys and be torn. What do you do, though, when maybe - just maybe - you don't have to choose? As my Aunt Josie says sometimes, "It's always complicated." * Random Acts of Crazy is a standalone, full-length novel featuring Darla Jo(sephine) Jennings, the 22-year-old niece of Josie Mendham from the Her Two Billionaires series. It has, like many New Adult novels, an exploration of sexuality for the three main characters, doesn't shy away from mature content, and Darla has a sailor's mouth.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Julia Kent turned to writing romance novels after learning that she could not work as a fighter pilot because her fear of flying disqualified her. Turning to her second love, she became a dog groomer, but had to abandon that job after adopting too many strays. Writing about very real, very flawed people is a natural extension of her life and, well, her. She lives on the east coast with her partner, two small children, seventeen dogs that weigh less than fifteen pounds each, and a monthly consumption of Nutella, brie and french bread that makes cardiologists cringe.
